Is it termites or ants?

Here at Butler’s Pest Solutions, we are busy preparing, as always, for the spring termite swarming season.  Here, in the Southeastern United States,  termites begin their annual mating rituals in early spring. This is characterized by swarming of winged termites rising like clouds and drifting across the countryside in search of places to form new colonies.

Many times homeowners see swarming insects and assume it is termites when actually it is flying ants.  Knowing the difference between flying ants and flying termites can be difficult unless you know what to look for.

Three BIG WAYS to tell the difference between a flying termite and a flying ant:

  1. Ants have a narrow wasp-like waste. Termites do not.
  2. Termites have two pairs of wings, all of equal length. Ants have two pairs of wings, with the front pair being longer than the rear pair.
  3. When folded, termites wings extend beyond the length of the abdomen. Ant’s wings are about the same length as the abdomen.

Soon after swarming, termites shed their wings. Many times homeowners find many tiny wings in a windowsill or on the floor. This is a sure sign that a termite swarm has occurred.

Swarming termites do not eat wood and damage homes. It is the workers that do all the damage. These are the ones you never see. They stay inside the wood or in mud tunnels where they travel across concrete or other surfaces to get to food sources.

If you see flying insects in or around your home, don’t take any chances.  Call a professional pest management consultant and get a proper identification. If it turns out to be ants, it is not such a big deal.  But if it is termites, you need to take action as soon as possible to avoid having serious damage done to your home.

Termites do more damage to homes in The United States each year than fires, flood, tornadoes and hurricanes combined. Don’t let YOUR HOME become a statistic.
